Mormons believe that a prophet is 1) someone who has a belief in Jesus Christ or 2) the figure on the earth who leads the Church of Jesus Christ. Adam, Moses, Joseph Smith, and Thomas S. Monson are all examples of prophets.
Prophets are seen as men who have the authority to direct the Church. They are revered and respected, but never worshipped. LDS Church members worship God, and believe Jesus Christ to be the "author and finisher" of their faith. Prophets follow the direction and doctrines established by Jesus Christ as they direct the Church.
